About me

My name's Kate Minogue. I’m an Alexander Technique teacher living and working in Lewes

I’ve spent my life in ten countries on three continents. I've worked as an editor, an English teacher, and an exercise instructor.

When people ask, ‘And what do YOU do?’ I always have to consider how to reply. It’s easier to say what Alexander Technique isn’t than what it is.

But as FM Alexander once said to a pupil, ‘You are not here to learn to do something right, but to get able to meet a stimulus that always puts you wrong and to learn to deal with it.’ We can’t float away on a fluffy cloud – we have to live life along with whatever it throws at us.

Generally people come because they want to get rid of a pain, improve their posture, or learn to sing better. And while I may be able to help with all these things, my main role is to help my students un-learn, change their habits, and throw away what they think they know. It’s a reshaping of one’s very being. This is an extremely tough nut to crack and I fail constantly.

Why don’t I give up? Because of the retired man who suddenly sprang up instead of heaving himself out of his chair. Because of the woman whose eyes lit up as she connected with something I said. Because of the student whose very appearance changed week by week as she learned to let go of self-imposed constraints.

It’s about finding balance and connection within yourself, then discovering how you fit in with the world around you - and how you influence that world. Teaching this is neither tiring nor draining. Instead it gives me a massive boost of energy – and that feels good!

My training

I know from personal experience the power of this simple technique that has become a way of life for me. Not only has it helped me care for my back - it has taught me how to respond better to the demands of everyday life.

  • To become a teacher, I followed a three-year full-time course at the Brighton Alexander Technique College run by Carolyn Nicholls.

  • I have completed the Alexander in Education Foundation Course with The Developing Self

  • I'm a member of STAT (The Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique).

  • I'm fully insured and have enhanced DBS certification.
