Another year begins ...

The sun shone this morning!

Christmas passed in a damp and misty blur. I did manage a couple of walks but never knew exactly where I was, and no views were to be enjoyed. But it’s amazing how a little sunshine makes you feel more optimistic and cheerful.

There’s a downside too. The sun streaming into my living room this morning revealed crumbs, splashes, and clumps of cat fur, so I’ve had an active morning cleaning up. Anything can become annoying when overdone. For example, a partner who possesses the ability to continue with a task until it’s completed may be annoyingly impervious to the needs of anyone else in the family. An active person may find it difficult to take time to relax and be still.

It’s all about finding balance

AT teaches you to observe without being judgemental. You experiment with movement and responses to find what works and what doesn’t. You have the freedom to discard the non-helpful and to take a new approach. Being more aware of the relationship between head, neck, and back develops into a re-education in moving with more ease and less tension. As you make connections within yourself you extend this ability by making connections with the people and environment surrounding you.

The journey counts

As the saying goes, ‘It’s not what you eat between Christmas and New Year that counts - it’s what you eat between New Year and Christmas that’s important.’ Don’t beat yourself up because you ate/drank a bit too much or didn’t get enough movement or perhaps you were more irritable than you’d have liked. We all have our off days but it’s important to accept those, not get discouraged, and to continue with the process of exploration.

There are so many improvements to hope for, most beyond my influence. I need to remember how inspiring is a ray of sunshine following days of gloom - and how the days of gloom have their own value!
